Bio
| Barry Spector
Born
in New York, Barry grew up as an artist. At the age of six he
attended art classes at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (although
the minimum age was seven) and took oil painting classes in the
cluttered, musty back rooms of art and framing stores. He chose
the one-hour subway commute to the High School of Art & Design
over the convenient Midwood High School closer to his home. There
he studied drawing, sculpture, large-format photography and animation.
In the early seventies, he earned a Communications BFA at Pratt
Institute with an emphasis on advertising and photojournalism.
In
his early career, Barry was as an art director at Avon Products
in New York, where he developed and executed campaigns, orchestrated
teams of photographers, set designers, location scouts, hair
and makeup artists, and fashion stylists, and trained other art
directors.
In
1984, Spector established Spector Design, an award-winning design
firm rooted in the traditions of conventional graphic design.
At about that time Apple computers became available to commercial
designers, and Barry harnessed this technology early on. He was
of the first designers to offer computer-assisted design and
production and re-educated clients such as Della Femina Advertising
as to its powerful benefits. By the mid 1990s, Barry shifted
his expertise to creating Web sites. His organizational, design
and writing skills became key ingredients in successfully developing
sites for clients such as Neuberger&Berman Management to
International Truck and Engine Corporation.
In
1997 Barry created the Museum of Public Relations, an online
resource exhibiting the early pioneers and practices of public
relations. The site, prmuseum.com, receives more than 90,000
hits per month. This non-profit organization thrives on the contributions
of students and both practicing and retired public relations
people.
Barry and his wife live in Millburn.
